40 – Guardians In Your Mind

In Your Mind

I took a class in creative writing about 3 years ago.  The first of its kind I had ever taken.  I was blown away.  I so absolutely loved it.  There was a point in the class where the professor spoke about the guardians in our minds.  They hold ideas back because they’re not good enough, perfect enough, bright enough, intelligent enough.  The guardians stand at the doors of the mind stepping on every single idea that dares to attempt going out into the world.  I had not until that day realized that the voices of these guardians are separate from me. They are echoes of my interpretation of other people’s judgements, dissatisfaction, sadness and fears.  Those voices were not mine although they clung to me fiercely.  That class was for me a first step in separating myself from those whispers.

This was not a fun piece to work on.  My mood was somber throughout the whole process.  And it’s done.  At the beginning of the year this idea would not have survived the onslaught of the guardians.  It would not have made it out. Progress.

Imagination

I really had fun with this illustration and it was a lot of work!  Towards the end the only thing that kept me going was the desire to see it complete. I can’t wait to share it, I’m so excited it is done and I think it looks pretty cool.

38 – Spirit in the Woods

Spirit in the Woods

I took longer than anticipated on this one.  I’m ambivalent about the results.  It doesn’t have the feeling of satisfaction my other pieces have for me.  I think the concept has potential and I wasn’t able to take to a place where it feels okay for me.   On the other hand I had good practice working with layers in Photoshop and found a nice effect that smooths out the lines.  It was fun that way, but frustrating too.  I am now reluctantly sharing. 🙂 I had to remind myself that in the end this blog is about recording my journey in art this year, and all paths have stages where things do not go as we want them to.  And that is okay.  My sister in law (a multitalented woman) and her son call these moments Beautiful Oops.  So, here it is, my beautiful oop.

37 – Fish in Pond

Fish in Pond

Fish in Pond

My first steps into considering an Art Challenge were done with watercolor.  This is one of the illustrations I made that encouraged me to actually commit to to this personal challenge for a whole year.  I have worked on Fish in Pond with the new tricks I’ve learned since I started and I am now declaring it complete.  Working with it has made me miss watercolors and wish for a fish tank! I’m still not sure about the last one though. I have eyed the space on top of the small bookshelf in the play room (aka dining area without dining set, but a couch and space for toys) and I’m not sure I have the time to really take care of it.
